Illustration Friday: "Insect"

This is something I did a while back but keep touching up in one way or another--do the beetles need a purple glaze for shadow? More reflective highlighting? Is the grass textured enough? And so on. I like the way the cloud came out, I think it's the best bit I've ever done with an oil bar. :) The beetles probably do need some more highlighting, now that I look at it again. Gah!

The title is "Going Home".

thought I'd stop by after you checked out mine and I really like this one. Especially the texture of the piece.

I also go back and forth on the size of the bug vs the road. Is the bug huge or the road narrow?

I like the blue beetles color, it brings contrast to the background. You're probably going to hate me for saying this, but right now my eye wants to see what the two beetles at the bottom are "looking" at. If you were to bring the first beetle down just a litte, so that the top was aligned with the bottom of the second beetle on the right, I think the eye would flow along the picture a lot better. Great concept!

I wouldn't do too much more to it, it is quite fine as it is.

Nice perspective here, as well as color and texture. I've got to get me some oil bars!

I think this is perfect. The darkness of the beetles gives it the feel of dusk or extremely overcast day. Needn't change a thing.

Gorgeous little travelers. And what a dreamy feel this illustration has. One usually sees the backs of scrawny men carrying their bandana-wrapped belongings tied to the end of a stick on long deserted roads like this. But here it's beetles on the eternal path. The texturing is great, too. It gives a weathered, yet timeless feel. Well done!
